Pasadena, California on January 31, 1993 was the place to be. The Rose Bowl hosts the Super Bowl for the last time. Not only was this the breakout party for the Dallas Cowboys and their Dynasty of the 90’s, but it was also essentially a primordial ooze of star power that included Garth Brooks singing the national anthem, Jon Bon Jovi perchance standing in the crowd (almost called upon to take Brooks’ place when the country super star almost backed out of the ceremony), O.J. freaking Simpson featured at the coin toss ceremony, and one Michael Jackson performing a very memorable halftime show.

Last offseason soon after losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in 5 games in the Western Conference finals, the San Antonio Spurs stayed pat and did not make any big moves other than drafting George Hill. Upon being bounced in the first round (the first time a Tim Duncan led Spurs team went fishin’ so soon) against their intrastate/conference rivals, the Dallas Mavericks in this year’s playoffs, San Antonio once again positions themselves as major contenders for the upcoming season.

With Wimbledon around the corner, and Roger Federer fresh off his complete career Grand Slam victory at Roland Garros, the 2009 French Open champion is poised to break the tie with Pete Sampras’s career Grand Slam wins record when he vies for his 6th overall Wimbledon Title on June 22nd.
Federer’s calm, quiet demeanor coupled with his understated dominance invariably draws comparison to his immediate predecessor, Pete Sampras who also carried himself with a fundamental presence in lieu of any flashiness usually associated with superstars in sports. Although both also share (as of press time) the career Grand Slam record, the similarities end with their tranquil mannerisms.
